Cooley Gardens Today

Cooley Gardens is rich with history and a wealth of diverse horticultural treasures. The gardens are located at the intersection of Capitol Avenue and Main Street just south of Lansing's central business district and the State Capitol. Occupying just over an acre of land, the park is bounded on the north by I-496 and on the west by General Motors. Outside its high green hedges lies the busy city, yet within is a haven where the stresses of city life can be forgotten in the quiet contemplation of the garden. If you would like to have your wedding reception or other special event in the garden, please call the Lansing Parks and Recreation Department (517) 483-4277 for details.

Garden "Rooms"

Typical of the formal estate gardens popular in the early part of this century, the park is composed of garden rooms enclosed by shrubbery, each with a different planting theme. Within the garden's formal structure the plantings have the informal exuberance of an English cottage garden. Roses tumble together with perennials spilling out of their beds, while stately  hedges provide a sense of order. Expansive open spaces, where concerts and weddings are held, contrast with small intimate areas where the garden visitor is invited to look more closely at the plantings.

An Inspiring Mix of Plants

The plant collections at Cooley Gardens are eclectic, featuring many rare and unique specimens. The extensive peony collection includes several tree peonies. The rose garden features David Austin English roses and classic old roses interplanted with a lavish mixture of perennials in the style of Gertrude Jekyll and old fashioned cottage gardens. Irises, hostas, hydrangeas and columbines are just a few of the many interesting plant collections. Visitors look forward to the innovative annual plantings featuring compelling plant and color combinations. Spectacular unusual conifers are also featured within the park's boundaries. Visitors to the garden always find inspiration for their own landscapes.
