In September, 1984, a group of concerned area residents recognized that Cooley Gardens was something special and decided to form the Friends of Cooley Gardens. The group dedicated itself to continuing to improve the park after it had suffered years of neglect. They hoped that with the increasing public interest in horticulture, Cooley Gardens might once again become the well-maintained, elegant park that it was intended to be. With the support of the City of Lansing, the Friends of Cooley Gardens has been able to bring back the gardens.
Friends of Cooley Gardens is an active group dedicated to restoring the gardens to their former splendor. To fund these efforts, they sponsor plant sales, concerts, and garden work days. In the past three years, their fundraising has yielded considerable results:
| $6,000 for a part-time garden intern | |
| $12,000 for plants and flowers for the gardens | |
| $5,600 for newsletters and promotional materials |
Friends of Cooley Gardens supports Eugene Cooley's original vision of horticultural education with workshops, a newsletter, and other informative and entertaining events. The head gardener conducts frequent tours of Cooley Gardens and lectures throughout the season.
You are invited to become a part of the effort to protect and improve Cooley Gardens. The Friends of Cooley Gardens has grown since its inception 16 years ago. Its continued success depends on the participation of people who care about enhancing the quality of life in Lansing. Your involvement can be at whatever level you wish, whether it's a donation of time or money. Current efforts of the group include these important undertakings:
| Continued funding of the part-time internship, with the goal of making it a full time position | |
| Ongoing development of the board of directors and membership to more fully draw on the pool of talented people in the Lansing area | |
| Improved visibility of Cooley Gardens as a city attraction | |
| Increase park visitorship and area residents' awareness of Cooley Gardens | |
| Ensure Cooley Gardens' longevity through funding of an endowment |
